History
PharmaXL was started in 2004 as a training center
in order to fill the need for
'brain updates' in the pharmaceutical industry.
After the successful organization of different
courses on intestinal drug absorption, biostatistics,
and medical writing, attended by many medical
and pharmaceutical professionals and students,
PharmaXL expanded its activities. At the end of
2005, the medical writing service was realized.
Since its launch, several European pharmaceutical
companies have used this writing service.
Management
PharmaXL was founded by Sven Deferme, PhD . Dr. Deferme got his pharmacy training at the University
of Leuven, Belgium. His main research activities
during his PhD work at the Laboratory
of Pharmacotechnology and Biopharmacy (University
of Leuven) consisted of the investigation of the
effect of human intestinal fluids and simulated
intestinal fluids on the function of P-glycoprotein,
and the study of the influence of fruit and plant
extracts on the absorption of P-glycoprotein substrates
using in vitro, ex vivo and in situ absorption models. This work
resulted in more than 30 peer reviewed publications
and poster abstracts.
He has several years of experience within the
pharmaceutical industry: he has worked for UCB in the PKDM department as a research scientist.
At UCB, Dr. Deferme was responsible for the development
and optimization of absorption and metabolism
models in early drug discovery (in vitro)
and acted as a study director for in-life discovery
studies (in house and at different CRO companies).
Before that, Dr. Deferme was active in the ADME
department of Eli
Lilly to set up new models and technologies
to investigate ADME key issues and as a PK study
director. In 2004, he launched PharmaXL.
He was also the organiser of the first meetings
(2002 and 2003) of the Dutch Speaking Pharmaceutical
Scientists at the Annual AAPS Meetings, and of
the first AccuSampler User group meeting (2003). He is a member of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Scientists
(EUFEPS),
The Belgian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences
(BGFW),
the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA)
and Leuven.Inc. He was co-organizer of the pre-satellite meeting of the Pharmaceutical Sciences World Congress in 2007 and he currently is a member of the Committee on Training and Education (CTE) of EUFEPS. Since January 2010, he also takes part in the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
