Effective Biomedical Writing - March 26-27, 2009

     
     

After the previous three successful editions, PharmaXL organizes this 2-day course again in 2009! This course is intended for medical doctors, pharmaceutical professionals and researchers in the biomedical field who regularly need to write texts in English.

Why attend?

The course provides practical guidelines that will help you improve your writing. You will learn to diagnose writer skills and what techniques to apply in order to upgrade your writing to the expected standard. Attention will be given to the following items:

  • accurate vocabulary (avoiding 'pharmaspeak', ethically correct wording, accurate wording),
  • how to guide the reader through the text,
  • the correct tense use in each section of the scientific article,
  • reducing word count techniques (abstracts),
  • language enrichment,
  • reviewing and editing of a document,
  • information structure in publications and manuscripts (IMRAD),
  • designing and using tables and figures, and
  • typical language problems in scientific writing.

    The number of participants is strictly limited to 20!

Participants are asked to:

1) send us a one-page text before March 15, 2009, describing your professional activities.

2) bring an article or any other text that you have recently written to the training session.

This course is not intended for native speakers of English!

Who?

The workshop will be given by Dr. Deferme. After obtaining his PhD at the University of Leuven (Belgium), Dr. Deferme has been working for several major pharmaceutical companies in the preclinical as well as in the clinical department.

Dr. Deferme launched PharmaXL in 2004 as a training center in order to fill the need for 'brain updates' in the pharmaceutical industry. The different workshops organized by PharmaXL have been attended by many medical and pharmaceutical professionals and students. Since 2005, PharmaXL has its own medical writing service which has been used by several European pharmaceutical companies over the years.

Where and when?

This course will take place on March 26-27, 2009 in the Faculty Club in Leuven (Belgium). The city of Leuven is a small, cosy university town and is located at 30 km from Brussels, at a 20 minute taxi-drive or trainride (time schedule here) from the international airport of Brussels (Zaventem).
