Biographies (in alphabetical order)
In this part the short biographies of persons
that have already functioned or will function
as a speaker for PharmaXL trainings are shown
(in alphabetical order):
Avdeef A., PhD (pION Inc.)
Dr. Avdeef is co-founder of pION
Inc. (USA) and Sirius
Analytical Instruments Ltd. (UK). Formerly, he was Assistant Professor
of Chemistry at Syracuse
University (USA). He is on the Advisory Board
of the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
He has authored about 80 technical papers in primary
scientific journals and chapters in books, and
has given about 300 invited speakerships. He has
held various positions at pION
Inc, Sirius
Analytical Instruments Ltd, Orion Research, Syracuse
University, University of California, and Caltech.
Adriaens E., PhD (University of Ghent)
After obtaining her PhD at the University of Ghent (Belgium), Dr. Adriaens has been working as a consultant for several major pharmaceutical companies in the preclinical as well as in the clinical department. She is now active at the University of Ghent (Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences) and as a close partner of PharmaXL, she acts as a consultant in the field of statistics.
Bermejo M., Prof (University
of Valencia)
Dr. Bermejo is an Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics
at the University
of Valencia (Spain) since 1998. She obtained
her PhD at the same university working on biophysical
absorption models and their use in the study of
the influence of surfactants and alcohol on intestinal
absorption. She has been working on the validation
of in situ and in vitro models
for oral permeability predictions and their application
to the biopharmaceutical development of new fluoroquinolones.
Dr. Bermejo is co-author with Gordon Amidon of
the English and Spanish versions of Modern
Biopharmaceutics. She is member of the board
of directors of the Drug
Delivery Foundation, SEFIG (Spanish Society of Industrial Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics)
and EUFEPS.
Curtis G., PhD (Bowman
Research)
Dr. Curtis obtained his PhD in Biochemistry at
the University
of Wales in 1966. In the period 1970 to 1993,
he was the head of a research team developing
models and solving problems in drug candidate
selection and preclinical development. Under his
supervision, this group developed ex vivo isolated perfused organs as model systems for
drug develoment and strategies for extrapolation
of data from animal systems to man. This led to
the formation of the Organ Perfusion Unit, a commercial
contract service to the pharmaceutical industry
at the University
of Cardiff and the subsequent formation of
BioDynamics Research Ltd. After joining DMI BioSciences
in 1999, he set up Bowman Research (UK) Ltd who
design, conduct and manage the production of drug
substances and the preclinical and clinical work
required for transition from laboratory to proof
of concept.
Deferme S., PhD (PharmaXL)
Dr. Deferme obtained his PhD at the University of Leuven in 2002 and is the founder
of PharmaXL. He is
the author of more than 30 peer reviewed articles
and abstracts. He is on the Editorial Board
of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Deferme has many years of experience in the writing of manuscripts and clinical documents as well as in medical communication.
Dhoest A., PhD (LT Consult)
After obtaining her PhD at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) and postdoctoral research at the State University of Ghent (Belgium), Dr. Dhoest has been working both in-house and freelance as scientific writer for the pharmaceutical industry. She has many years of experience in writing clinical study protocols and study reports.
Petrauskas A., PhD (Pharma
Algorithms)
Dr. Petrauskas gained his PhD in chemical enzymology
at Moscow University in 1992. In 1993 he started Advanced
Chemistry Development, a software company
that develops physicochemical and spectral property
predicting tools for analytical chemists. In 1998
he left ACD to start Pharma
Algorithms, a new software company that develops
predictive tools for building new algorithms in
ADME/Tox and drug design.
Ungell A.-L., Prof (AstraZeneca,
Uppsala University)
Dr. Ungell has a PhD in Zoophysiology and is an
Associate Professor in Pharmaceutics at the Uppsala
University. She presently holds a position
as a Team Leader and Principal Scientist at DMPK
& Bioanalytical Chemistry, AstraZeneca R&D Mölndal, Sweden. Her group consists
of 12 persons working as support to preclinical,
clinical and pharmaceutical projects regarding
drug absorption and transporter issues. She has
the responsibility to develop models to study
drug absorption, screening for structure/absorption
relationship using automated screen facilities
and QSAR modelling, evaluate different absorption
mechanisms and transporters, link in vitro animal studies to in vivo pharmacokinetics
and pharmaceutical dosage form development and
evaluate drug-drug interactions.
Van Deun K., PhD (University
of Leuven)
After obtaining her Master of Science in Statistics
in 1999, Dr Van Deun acquired a PhD in Psychology
from the University
of Leuven in 2005. In her PhD, she investigated
and developed tools for the geometrical modeling
of rank order data. During this period, she was
also involved in the statistical training of master
students. After her PhD, she worked as a biostatistician
at SGS Mechelen. Currently, she works as a postdoctoral
researcher on advanced regression models, with
the objective of modeling challenging data sets
that come from the field of bio-informatics.
Vekemans L., PhD (University
of Leuven)
Dr. Vekemans has been
teaching at the Language Institute of the University
of Leuven (Belgium) for 20 years and has specialised
in biomedical English. She teaches writing and
presentation courses to PhD researchers and lecturers
in the biomedical field.
